If you have little or no experience with Winzip or FTP it is recommended that you print these instructions first as they will be easier to follow

WinZip is a free program that you can use to Zip, Encrypt, and Password Protect your files.

WinZip can be downloaded at www.winzip.com here Simply download the free trial and follow instructions

The following instructions for encryption are based on WinZip version 11.1:Top

  1. Select the file(s) that you want to encrypt by left clicking or holding the <control> (ctrl) key while clicking multiple files
  2. Once you have selected your files right click on one of the selected files
  3. In the context menu (the right-click menu) select "Winzip"
  4. Then select "Add to zip file.." (see image below)
    context menu
  5. If you have not purchased Winzip and are using the evaluation version you may receive a registration screen. If you do, click "Use evaluation version" button to continue using Winzip.

  7. In the "Add to archive" textbox make sure that zip file you are making is saved somewhere where you can find it.
  8. Click "New"
  9. A window will appear that will allow you to name the zip file you are making.
  10. Enter a name for your zip file and click "Ok".
  11. In the example below I have named my zip file "EncryptedDocuments"

    name zip file

  12. In this case the zip file is being created in the same directory as the originating file in a folder called "New Folder" on the desktop
  13. The next step is to click the checkbox next to "Encrypt added files" so that a check appears in the box as so:

    encrypt checkbox

  14. Now click the "Add" button in the top right-hand corner.
  15. After you click "Add" a window will appear asking you to select a password and encryption level.
  16. Type in a password. This password will need to be sent to the recipient (by email, fax, phone, etc.) so they will be able to unzip the file when they receive it.
  17. Select 128 Bit encryption only if you are sure the recipient has an updated version of Winzip. If you are not sure keep all other default settings.

  18. Click "Ok"
  19. You are done! You have just successfully zipped, encrypted, and password protected your files! Congratulations!
  20. To open this file the recipient would unzip it normally as they would any ordinary zip file. They will have receive a password window and once they enter the password you have given them they will be able to extract the files.
